Kriegsmarine Clock by Kieninger & Obergfell
Taken from U-Boat 'U-1165' before being sunk off Scotland in 1945
This brass-cased Kriegsmarine clock by Kieninger & Obergfell, was removed from U-1165, by a member of the Scottish dock yard personnel at Loch Eriboll. After the vessel was stripped out, it was sunk off Loch Eriboll on 30th December 1945.
Kriegsmarine clock for sale made by Kieninger & Obergfell. The WW2 German navy clock with brass case, hinged front with screwed front glass. The silvered clock dial with black numbers, eagle & swastika 'M', and '17 260 N' serial number. The case-back with most of the blackened finish, and the impressed case number '12 133.' The '33' digits also stamped to the component parts. The Kriegsmarine clock with a brass key for opening and winding.
Condition report: Some general use. Overall very good condition. The brass case free from dents. With the exception of the back-plate, the original black paint, lacking. Black paint evident within the hinged assembly.
The backplate with three, projecting panels, with holes for securing the clock to the U-Boat's bulkhead. The dial in very good to excellent condition, with 80% of the original, silvered-finish remaining, and 95% black in-fill to the numbers and motifs. Both the eagle/swastika & 'M', along with the serial number, crisp and clear. The movement serviced, and for sale in working condition. No warranty implied.
Provenance: Sold through an auction in Dingwall, Scotland in the 1970s. In the collection of a London-based doctor until 2019.
Background to U-1165:U-1165 was a Type VIIC/41 U-boat, which saw service during World War II. She was laid down on 31th December 1941 by Danziger Werft, Danzig as yard number 137, launched on 20th July 1943 and commissioned on 17th November 1943 under Oberleutnant zur See Hans Homann.
The boat's service career began on 17th November 1943, with the 8th Training Flotilla, followed by active service with 9th Flotilla on 1st June 1944, followed by 11th Flotilla on 1st August 1944. U-1165 surrendered on 9th May 1945 at Narvik, Norway. She was transferred to Loch Eriboll, Scotland on 19th May 1945. She was sunk on 30th December 1945 at 55°44′N 08°40′W, as part of Operation Deadlight.
